Interleukins-1 (IL-1) α and β belong to the family of regulatory and inflammatory cytokines which play an important role in the regulation of acute inflammation. IL-1α stimulates bone resorption, nuclear phospholipase C, and induces nitric oxide synthase. The closely related proteins IL-1α and IL-1β share approximately 62% homology in amino acid sequence but exhibit nearly identical biochemical action.
