The synthetic peptide PKTPKKAKKL can be used as a substrate for Cdk5 (cyclin-dependent kinase 5) for in vitro kinase assays. It is phosphorylated by Cdk5 with a Km of 6 μM.
Cdk5 is predominantly active in the nervous system and plays an essential role in neuronal development. Aberrant Cdk5 activity has been reported in neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's disease, amylotrophic lateral sclerosis and Parkinsons's disease.
