(2) JBScreen Pentaerythritol – Screening with Alternative Polymeric Precipitants
|
| |
Pentaerythritol propoxylate and pentaerythritol ethoxylate are novel polymeric precipitants serving as cryoprotectants, as well. They differ from traditional precipitants like MPD and PEG's in size and nature, thus providing a completely different screening approach.
The successful application of pentaerythritol polymers to yield protein crystals was first described by Gulick et al.[1]. Now this class of precipitants is well-established and used for crystallizing protein complexes as well as membrane proteins. Crystals of cbb3 Cytochrome Oxidase were successfully grown using pentaerythritol ethoxylate as precipitation agent, its X-ray structure was published in Science last year[2].
