X-ray crystallography revealed the structure and functioning of many biological macromolecules, i.e. proteins, nucleic acids and even the ribosome. Single crystals are a prerequisite for X-ray structure determination. Proteins may form crystals when slowly precipitating from an aqueous solution if the conditions are appropriately chosen. However, the crystallization of proteins is still a trial-and-error process.
