Luminescent ruthenium complexes possess interesting properties compared with conventional dyes. Very long lifetimes of luminescence (up to 1 µs) and large stokes shifts of more than 100 nm allow for high signal to noise ratios.

Ruthenium dppz complexes form stable adducts with DNA.
Upon formation of this adducts luminescence of the complex is switched on and long lived excited states can be detected.
Excitation between 400 and 500 nm will result in a luminescence at 610 nm.
