Coenzyme A (CoA) is the active compound that transfers acyl groups in acyltransferases or CoA transferases. By forming chemically relatively unstable thio-ester bonds, CoA activates fatty acids and other compounds in the cell, enabling them to be metabolized in subsequent reaction cascades.
